Get ready for your online classes - Zoom User Guide

Zoom user guide

The world has changed, and so has Maison. Get ready to dance with Maison Burlesque ONLINE! Whether you’re in Melbourne or anywhere else in the world, here’s your chance to dance with Maison Burlesque in your own living (and even in your own time!)

We've prepared a handy guide for our current students on what to expect when using Zoom for our live online interactive classrooms. Read on!

1. GET ZOOM READY

- All our classes this term will be run online using a program called Zoom.

- You can download the Zoom app to your smartphone or visit www.zoom.us to install the computer version onto your laptop.

- You do not need a paid account. You can either sign up for a free account (recommended) or sign in as a guest.

2. GET THE ZOOM LINK FOR YOUR CLASS

- Each class will have a unique Zoom link that you will need in order to join the class.

- Maison admin staff will email you your Zoom link to the email address we have for you on our enrolment system.

- TECH CLASSES: A zoom link will be emailed to you the morning of your class. If you enrol late, no worries! You have up to a half hour before the class to drop-in. There will be a new link emailed each week (to allow for drop-in students).

- CHOREO CLASSES: A zoom link will be emailed to you the morning of YOUR FIRST CLASS. This will be the same link you will use each week to join your Choreo class.

3. HANG OUT IN THE WAITING ROOM

- Please aim to be in the waiting room for your class 10-15 minutes prior to class start time. - You just need to click the Zoom link you were provided and hang in the virtual waiting room until your teacher is ready to admit you into class.

- Please do not leave the waiting room or close down the app - but by all means go and grab yourself a drink or whatever while you are waiting.

- Teachers will begin letting students into the class from the waiting room 5 minutes prior to class start time so we are ready to start on time.

- If you are late your teacher will let you in from the waiting room when they have a free moment.

4. JOIN THE CLASS AND GET YOUR ZOOM ON

- If you hover on the top right corner of your screen you will see the option to switch between 'Speaker View' and the other view we like to call 'Brady Bunch View' (Gallery View). During the class you'll want it set on Speaker View to get the best view of your teacher. - You'll also want to hover over the bottom of your screen and click the 'Chat' button so that you have access to the group chat.

- Sometimes your teacher will have you 'muted' to avoid unnecessary background noise - you can be 'unmuted' in order to speak when needed. The chat is always available to you as a communication. Your teacher will also demonstrate hand signals you can use to get attention or communicate quickly during the class.

TIPS FOR SETTING UP YOUR SPACE

- We understand everyone's living room may not be the ideal set up for a dance class, and we have kept this in mind as we choreograph to ensure you'll still get the most out of your class even in a small space.

- For most coursework you will need a cleared space of at least 1.8m x 1.8m (enough to stretch out a yoga mat)

- Your laptop/phone can be placed wherever you can, but it's best to be at least 1.5m away from your dance space so your teacher can see as much of your body as possible on the screen. They may ask you to tilt your camera so they can see your feet. If you do not have a device with a webcam, that's not an issue. You can still participate in the class it just means your teacher can't see you.

TIPS FOR MAXIMISING YOUR INTERNET CONNECTION

- To get the best out of the Zoom meeting, you'll want to do what you can to optimise your internet connection. You can try: Getting closer to modem if using wifi Ask other household members to get off the internet (eg facebook, netflix, uploads/downloads) - they can read a book instead! Turning off your personal video (by clicking 'Stop Video') means you aren’t uploading video which can improve a bad connection You could try switching to mobile data hotspot if wifi isn’t working

DROP IN CLASSES

- If you would like to do a casual drop in please try to book at least 30minutes before class start so our admin staff have time to send you your Zoom link.

CONTACTING US

- Our admin staff will be available via email during class times. - If you are having any difficulties with the Zoom platform, our admin team will be available to assist. Please email your issue to info@maisonburlesque.com.au ASAP and they will help you out. They will be working while classes are running and can attend to your need to ensure you get back into your class as soon as possible. Your teacher may not have the answer to any technical questions, so please contact admin for any technical issues, and your teacher for more class specific issues.

- If you would like some extra help with the Zoom platform, Poppy is available for 1:1 Zoom dates to teach you the technology. Shoot her an email at poppy@maisonburlesque.com.au to set up a virtual date.

CLASS RECORDINGS

- Having a virtual classroom means we can record every class. This is useful for if you have to duck out during a class for a family matter or if you are unable to attend your class. - These private recordings will be emailed to you the morning after your class, and will be available for viewing in the cloud (not downloading) for one week, after which they will be removed.

- Class recordings are strictly for the staff and specific class participants only. Please do not share these videos with anyone outside of your class.

- Zoom only records the "active speaker" which will primarily be your teacher. If you do not wish to have yourself recorded if you are in active speaker mode, you can manually stop the video on your end via the menu at the bottom of your screen. This will only stop your video from being recorded, not the rest of the class.

- For Showcase courses, teachers will send you separate videos of their choreography via your student facebook or whatsapp group that you can use for practice between classes.

*IMPORTANT* Injury Disclaimer:

Students are responsible for ensuring that they are physically and medically fit for the course/class that they are participating in. If in doubt of your suitability for the class please do not hesitate to contact us. During the class students must take care at all times for their own personal safety and must inform the teacher of any physical limitations, current or ongoing injuries or medical conditions they have prior to the commencement of the class. This is especially important via the online platform as your teacher is not there to manually ensure your safety. If for any reason you become injured or feel any pain or discomfort during your class you must stop your participation and inform your instructor immediately. This is an exciting new frontier and we're pumped to get started!

See you all online!
