🌅 Saturday 10th January🌅
Topic of the Day: Classic Burlesque
⏰ 9am - 6pm Full Day intensive
w Poppy Cherry, Maple Rose, Domino de Jour, Bella de Jac & Whisky Falls
Join your group facilitator Poppy Cherry for a curated day of workshops designed to broaden your understanding and appreciation of the wonderful vintage art form that is classic burlesque.
Morning: History of Burlesque
We begin the day with a welcome and warm up, then dive deep into the origins of burlesque with Maple Rose with a look at the performers who shaped burlesque from its Victorian theatre roots through the postwar boom. We’ll trace the evolution from 19th-century parody and spectacle to the star power of early 20th-century striptease icons such as Gypsy Rose Lee, Sally Rand, Josephine Baker.
This is followed by an exploration with Domino de Jour on the shifting landscape of the 1950s–1980s—from the polished elegance of nightclub headliners and go-go culture to the political edge, punk spirit, and experimental artistry that reshaped striptease and cabaret in the late 20th century.
Alongside a brief historical overview, participants will sample movements inspired by these eras and artists, gaining a practical feel for the style shifts that built the foundation of modern burlesque.
Then we break for a delicious lunch spread provided at the studio - dietary requests can be accommodated (please note on your enrolment)
Afternoon: Movement and Play
Your afternoon kicks off with Bella de Jac where we SLOW it down - through conversation, written & movement exercises, and a little bit of historical context we’ll unpack why slow seductive performances can feel so challenging, and demystify how to nail the choreography and performance of your next sultry performance.
Then its time to join Whisky Falls for a play and exploration of traditional burlesque props & costumes, and explore their uses in conventional and un-conventional ways. Mastering props is important to show your understanding of classic vintage, golden age classic and neo burlesque styles alike, and this mastery will bring your charcter and story to a new and enticing level!
Your day ends with a wind-down and wrap up with Poppy - including a cheeky knock-off drink to celebrate the end of day.
🌅 Sunday 11th January🌅
Topic of the Day: Classic Burlesque
⏰ 9am - 6pm Full Day intensive
w Whisky Falls, Lauren Bok, Ruby Slippers, Willow J and Poppy Cherry
Join your group facilitator Whisky Falls for a curated day of workshops designed to broaden your understanding and appreciation of the wonderful vintage art form that is classic burlesque.
Morning: Characterisation and Camp!
We begin the day with a welcome and warm up, then join Lauren Bok to learn the secrets of how to create an accurate, bombastic and imaginative representation of your favourite celebrity, tv or movie character, or anything else in between! Be guided on how to mimic and amplify gesture, pose and caricature so your audience knows exactly who's in front of them, and how to incorporate sound and costume to make your character leap off the stage!
Then embrace your inner Camp with Ruby Slippers - Embrace the art of celebrating exaggeration, affectation, and glorious artifice. Taking inspiration from Drag, theatre, old Hollywood, and those who live larger than life, we’ll be exploring the world of camp and how we can inject it into our performances.
Then we break for a delicious lunch spread provided at the studio - dietary requests can be accommodated (please note on your enrolment)
Afternoon: Butoh and the Next Level
Your afternoon kicks off with Willow J for an exploration of Butoh - an Avant-Garde dance/movement practice which breaks the boundaries of conventional dance forms, such as western ballet, and asks the practitioner to challenge their perception of dance through exploring grotesque, absurd and provocative movement. Originally called "Dance of Darkness," asks the practitioner to connect to the depth of their soul and explore the essence of human emotions and bring these out to play through highly physicalized movement.
Then it’s time to take your performance from Zero to Hero with Poppy Cherry - we look at performance through the lens of both performer and audience, addressing common pitfalls as well as practical considerations and strategies to enhance your audience engagement. During this workshop, participants will also each be guided in crafting a mini performance piece that weaves in themes throughout all of the day's workshops.
Your day ends with a wind-down and wrap up with Whisky - including a cheeky knock-off drink to celebrate the end of day.
NOTE: Our Weekend Intensive can only be booked as a full single-day or two-day program. The program is designed to contain a mixture of theory and movement. Both days are open to students of all levels from beginner to experienced alike.
Please also note that the concepts on the Craft and Character day can be more challenging - but still open to anyone who has an open mind and a willingness to play!
